William's
tutor was Ronald Killington-Hensley, author of a respected monograph proving The
Aeneid was fiction. He said William's paper tracing Aphrodite archetypes in
Dickens was rubbish.
After his siring, William read news of the archaeological finds of Heinrich
Schliemann. By Schliemann's death in 1890, Hensley's work was forgotten.
William's college nemesis was Aubrey Chelthenham, who won all the poetry prizes.
He was tickled, in the 1920s, to see Chelthenham become a running joke among the
hard modern Algonquin set, who mocked his rococo stylings.
And Harrison Ainsworth, the novelist who suggested William study accounting?
Just another dead white European male.
