William's friends are laughing, almost dancing away, leaving him on the stoop.

The theater, supper, drinks `til dawn. His heart aches with envy. Not of the night's entertainment, but their light-heartedness. Their future is a big gray area, no absolutes. They can do anything, dally
all they like without consequence. Reality has yet to make an appearance.

William turns, mounts the steps, dodges the crack (40 pounds to fix, that), enters the house (400 per annum property tax) and goes in to Mother.

Things are fixed in black and white - and red ink - for them. Always will be.
