Their laughter is a monstrous din, a hollow paean to a withered god. He slips out the door unnoticed, fleeing from their emptiness. There is no love for him in this world—his delicate, foolish words flamed and burnt by their deadened eyes. They are dead to him. She is dead to him now.

The cool damp air is thick with the scent of violets. Unseeing, he brushes by the forlorn waif, futilely peddling her flowers in the dark. He rips his poem of love and scatters the fragments behind him
as he rushes into the night, leaving a luminescent trail of lost dreams in his wake.

Into the darkened alley, he stumbles, blind with tears. Into the labyrinth he falls. What monster awaits him there? What treacherous temptations, darkness disguised as light? He pauses, lost to the night. For a brief moment, he feels a rush of fear and then slowly, recognition. There are other destinies than love.
