My world is very big. But these days it's very still and empty.

Even the big one that moves things around hardly ever comes in
anymore. When she does come she moves very slow and she looks like
she wants to lie down and give me a hug to make herself feel better.
But she never does.

The new girl with the brown fur is mad all the time. I think she
throws things in her world, because sometimes the wall our worlds
share shakes like something hit it.

I know why they're not happy. It's because my girl's gone away.

****
I had a good day today. My girl and the rusty-furred one and the new
dark boy came breezing in. They were laughing. My girl looked happy.
So I didn't try to tell her how much we all miss her.

They just took some things out of the clothes room and put some other
things in. But my girl stayed behind a little longer and gave me a
hug, extra-tight, and a kiss before she left!

She put me down on the dresser instead of the shelf or the bed. Guess
she forgot. The dark boy was calling to her and she put me down in
kind of a hurry. I don't usually get to see the world from this side.

But I'm facing the big shiny hole in the wall where the tree is, and
I can see a little flash of light from down under the tree.

And it's moving toward my world! Somebody's down there!

****
The door to my world slides open so slowly it creaks. I can see it in
one eye. A head pops through the opening and looks around to one side
of my world, then the other.

The fur on the head is yellow. Not warm gold like my girl or the big
one's fur, or shiny gold like that friend of the big shaggy-furred
dark one. Yellow. Like one of the other stuffed animals' fur. I've
never seen fur like that on a big one! Is it real?

The head belongs to a boy. He doesn't look like the other boys I
sometimes see here, the big shaggy-furred one or the dark one my girl
has now, or the rusty-furred boy that was here once with the rusty-
furred girl, that time when there was all that noise in the outer
world.

They were all pink and soft. This one is white and hard and tall,
like the dark one that used to come in through the window sometimes.
But the yellow one is leaner and he looks like he knows he's not
supposed to be here.

Once he's sure my girl isn't around, he steps all the way into the
room and smiles. It's not a nice smile. "Oooh. While Buffy's away,
Spike will play," he says. What does that mean? What's a Spike?

He starts opening the little boxes in the dresser I'm sitting on.
Then he pulls out a few of the little scraps of cloth my girl puts
her legs in before she puts her real clothes on and holds them up to
his face. "No...no...ahhh yes!" That one he puts in his pocket.
Doesn't he have any of those of his own? My girl has lots, so they
can't be that hard to get.

"Let's see what else we can find today, Buffy..." Did my girl come in
when I wasn't looking? I check. She didn't. Why is Yellow talking to
her then?

He picks up a few things off the bed and - he sniffs them! He looks
like a big one but he acts like a dog. The first dark one never acted
like that.

None of the stuffed animals or pillows he picked up off the bed seem
to be what he's looking for. He put them all back down again after
one sniff. Now he's trying a long woolly thing on a hook on the door,
and a piece of flowery fabric hanging on the shiny picture.

That's funny. I can see me in the shiny picture, but I can't see
Yellow.

Now he's poking through the shiny things on chains and needles my
girl decorates herself with. Sometimes the girl with the brown fur
takes those into her world without telling my girl. I don't like it
when she does that. I hope he doesn't -

HEY! Put me down, you - you -

He - he - *sniffed* me! What is it Girl says? Eeeewww.

I don't think I'll be sniffing *him* anytime soon. He smells like the
time the big plant with the colored lights on it caught on fire.

"A-haaa! *You* are just what I'm lookin' for, Piggie!"

That's *Mr. Gordo* to you, Buster!

He pokes at my belly, then scratches it. That tickles!

He tucks me under his arm and starts out the door.

Uh-oh! I'm not allowed this far out into the outer world! And, and
I'm - I'm all upside down!

Big one? Brown fur? Girl?

Help?

****
Wheee!

Goodness, I never knew anyplace could be so *big*! There's no top
wall, so I can see all these glittery shiny things winking down at me
in the dark. They're pretty. Like the shiny things in my girl's
decorations, but brighter and a lot more.

Yellow is moving very very fast. I think I might be sick...

He stops at the door to - his world? I guess. It's a big heavy stone
thing, but he moves it like it's easy. This whole world is stone, and
it's dark and cold.

"About time you got back, Blondie Bear," somebody says from the big
bed. Is there a bear here? If Yellow has a bear of his own, what did
he take me away from my girl for?

The bed is pretty, all shiny swirly gold things. The girl on it isn't
as pretty as my girl. She looks like she's trying to look like my
girl, with the same kind of clothes and fur brushed the same way. But
she's not soft or pretty, and she looks all white like Yellow does.

Yellow hides me in the corner of a chair. I'm all squished down into
the cushion. Ouchie! Bad Yellow!

"Harm." Harm? Is she hurt? "Could use a li'l solitude, poodle.
How 'bout you go hunt up some dinner?"

Wow. She's good. I can actually hear her pout. She could give Brown
Fur some lessons.

"If you go out now, poodle...we might do something...a li'l *special*
when you get back..." She giggles and I hear her hop off the bed.

"Want me to bring you back something fresh?" I can hear a smacking
sound. I think she's touching her mouth to him like the dark ones do
to my girl. Eeewww.

"Nah. I'll stick with leftovers tonight, Harm." She leaves, and he
turns back to the chair. "Already got myself somethin' fresh anyway,"
he says as he pulls me out from under the cushion. Oh no! Is he going
to - gulp - eat me? GIRL! HELP!

****
He doesn't eat me.

He takes me down a hole in the bottom wall with little flat steps in
it. There's - hey! That's my girl's blue sweater! And that's her old
stretchy bottoms! And her shiny neck decoration. I thought brown fur
took that one!

They're all on a big plastic doll made up to look like my girl.

I think I'm scared.

****
He sits down on a bench and puts me down on his knee. Then he takes
the cloth scrap out of his pocket. It's white and lacy. He moves his
fingers all over it, sticking them into the little holes in the lace.
Then he runs his hand up and down the middle piece that isn't lacy,
puts his hand up to his face and - smells it? Ewww.

"Ohhhh Buffy..." He sounds happy and sad at the same time. That's
strange. I wish he wouldn't talk to my girl like she's really here.
She wouldn't be caught dead in a place like this. She likes bright
colorful cheery worlds where it's warm and there are lots of people
around.

He puts the cloth in a box on the bottom wall with - hey! He's got
*lots* of scraps like that in that box! If he's already got his own,
then why did he take my - oh.

Then he picks me up and does the sniffing thing again. This time he
turns me all around in his hands and sniffs me all over. The turning
around part is kind of fun. But then he puts his nose in my tummy and
breathes in deep. That's - umm - he's put his tongue out. He's not -

Okay. He only touched his mouth to me for a minute. It wasn't *that*
bad. I don't want him to do it again, though.

His eyes are closed and he's sighing again. "Buffy, Buffy, Buffy...."
His hand rubs my tummy in time with the words. That's - kind of nice,
actually. Now he looks sad, but the rubbing seems to make him feel
better too.

"I miss you so much, Buffy. All that time I was at Giles' an' you
were makin' me crazy, every day, I never dreamed...All I could think
about was gettin' outta there, an' now I have...All I can think is
how much I miss seeing you...being near you..."

I miss my girl too, Yellow. But I don't think you mean it the same
way.

"I tell you, Pig, that girl of yours is gonna be the death of me." He
laughs. It's not a nice sound. "Not quite like she's *supposed* to be
the death of somebody like me, though. She's not gonna make it that
quick. I'll just burn up from the inside from missin' 'er....from
wantin' 'er...an' knowin' I can never even be as close to 'er as I
was back at Giles' again..."

Now he just sounds sad. I know about being lonely. I'm sorry, Yellow.
Go ahead and hug if it makes you feel better. Just don't lick, okay?
That's ewww. Hugging is good though.

"I love her, Pig. Your girl. I really do." He sighs. "I love 'er so
much I'm not even gonna make her upset or mad by tellin' her I
love 'er. I'll just - keep takin' little bits an' scraps of her to
play with, whenever I wanna go an' make her be with me. I'll keep my
feelin's to myself even if it kills me. An' it just might, Pig."

Oh.

That's - really sad.

I'm sorry, Yellow. But if my girl doesn't love you, I don't know what
you should do.

She's a nice girl. Really. I bet if you're just nice to her, she'll
be nice to you back. Okay?

He does hug me to his neck then. I think I feel a little of that wet
stuff in the corner of his eye.

"She loves *you,* I bet, Pig. Holds you and pets you and tells you
her secrets," he says.

She used to. Now she's gone off with Rusty and the dark one. I miss
her, too.

"You're a lucky pig, you are. Those are all the exact things I wish
she'd do to me, an' I'd like to do to her back. I'd like to make her
feel - special. Loved."

Oh.

I don't know what to say.

"I bet *you* make her feel loved, Pig." He sighs again and gets
up. "Sooo...if I can't make 'er feel like that...I guess I better
make sure *you* can. C'mon, Pig. Back we go."

****
He takes me back out into the Big Place with the twinkly lights. This
time he's a lot carefuller about how he carries me though. It's nice.

He slips back into the Big World With Walls where my girl lives -
lived. He's very sneaky, looking around corners and making sure
nobody sees us. I think the Big Ones are asleep.

He opens a door very carefully, and I can see my world on the other
side. He puts me gently back down on the dresser where he found me.

"G'bye, Pig. Take good care of Buffy for me, okay? I'll do what I can
when she's out in the big bad world too. But she won't let me in
here, so you gotta take care of her for me." He smiles, but I think
his heart's only half in it. "Put in a good word for me if y'think
you might while you're about it, okay, Pig?"

I would, but she doesn't hear me when I talk. I just hear her when
she talks.

He scratches my tummy again and leaves.

Poor Yellow. He misses her.

I miss her too.

Come home soon, Girl.
