Guide to Writing Mr. Gordo
Why Mr. Gordo?
Mr. Gordo was introduced during the second season of BtVS. Angel was wandering around Buffy's girlhood room and found him on a shelf amidst some girly paraphernalia. This was before Buffy lost her virginity and entered the world as a sexual being...an adult, if you will. Mr. Gordo is next (and last) seen in "The Freshman" when the vamps of Sunday's gang stole Buffy's belongings...her innocence and childhood.
What does the pig represent in American culture...other than a meal? The
answer: innocence.
The
Three Little Pigs - the big bad wolf tries to eat them.
Then
there's the little piggies on your feet. One went to market, the other stayed
home, the next had roast beef, the other none, and that last one who went
"wee, wee, wee" all the way home.
Wilbur
- Charlotte's friend who just wanted to keep from being breakfast. He was
"some pig" indeed.
Babe
- the sweet, adventurous pig.
Americans love
piggies...and not just for breakfast.
After "The Freshman," a new stuffed animal appeared on Buffy's bed -
the spot of honor. A brown bear with a red ribbon around his neck.
Perhaps we first saw this toy in "Wrecked," right after she first had sex
with Spike. The bear is representative of a wild, difficult thing. "That
was a bear of a test." "She is a bear to deal with."
Then there's the red ribbon, which is representative of blood, or the scarlet letter. The bear with his red ribbon is the exact opposite of innocence - experience, carnal knowledge, hardships and difficult decisions.
The bear stands for her loss of innocence and entry into adulthood.
Why is Mr. Gordo a Pig?
As noted in the
Newsgroup, Joss Whedon has a thing for pigs....
In
the movie, the name of the Hemery High sport teams were the Hogs.
The
"Hug the World" celebration had a piggie banner.
On
TV at Sunnydale High, they were the Razorbacks. Xander ate their mascot.
In
the 7th season, the writers included Hogwarts references.
Sunnydale
vamps prefer pig's blood to cow's blood.
Andrew
tried to kill a pig to open the hellmouth.
Buffy's favorite stuffed animal is, of course....
Coincidences? We think not.
