The eastern sky lightened. It would soon be day again. Buffy waited.
As she had done the day after, and the day after that and after that. Five days now she had kept a silent vigil. Still he had not come. At first, they had indulged her. It had been a great loss. Then they had begun to fret. Sure, it was summer, but with nowhere to stay, even the summer nights could get chilly. Finally, their patience snapped. "Buffy," Willow spoke tenderly, "he isn't coming. It's over." Giles, "I can't say I understand your feelings, but I've always respected them. However, don't you feel.....?" "C'mon, B, other fish in the sea. A good night's sleep, a shower and we'll have you all five by five." Buffy turned and smiled. Then turned back, looking across the wasteland that had been Sunnydale.
"Buffy, you don't see Xander moping about. He's lost as much as you have." They both looked at the young man. He was whittling at some wood. He finished, looked closely, then tossed it away. Then picked up another piece. "OK, maybe he is. But shouldn't we go ? For his sake ?" She looked away. No, they could go. She knew that he would be back and until he was she would be waiting. Waiting for Gordo....
